Cooper debuted on television in the Netflix miniseries Adolescence in March 2025 as 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who was charged with murder.[10][11] Stephen Graham, the co-creator of the series, had tried to hire an unidentified northern English actor for the part.[7][12] Cooper’s drama school was contacted by the Adolescence production team, who requested to see tapes of their best northern actors. Teachers at the school subsequently reported that they thought Cooper “just had something” and that the production team visited the school multiple times before he was finally given the part.[9] Out of more than 500 auditions, he had been chosen.[13][14] He spent July through October of 2024 filming the series.[15][16]

The Evening Standard wrote that “his is a performance that may be the best debut ever seen by a child actor” in response to the role’s enormous critical praise.[17][18] [19] At the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, he went on to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, becoming both the youngest male actor to win an Emmy and the youngest actor to ever receive a nomination in the category.[20][21][22] In addition, he received the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Film/Miniseries, the Gotham TV Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series, and the Screen International Star of Tomorrow award.[23][24] [25]

He appeared in the music video for English musician Sam Fender’s song “Little Bit Closer” in May 2025.[26] He portrayed Callum in the BBC Three series Film Club later that year.[13] In Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, which is scheduled for release on February 13, 2026, he will portray young Heathcliff.[27]

Cooper lives in Orford, Cheshire, a Warrington suburb, as of April 2025.[28] He presented the match ball at a Super League rugby match between Warrington Wolves and Hull F.C. on April 12, 2025, and he is a supporter of Liverpool F.C.[5][29]
